Rolando -Chino- Estrada

Rolando Estrada Cuevas is an economist by profession and an independent entrepreneur with over thirty years of experience. Fifteen years ago, he discovered a deep passion for photography, which soon became a natural extension of his curiosity and creativity.

Guatemala, with its vibrant cultural tapestry, became the perfect backdrop for Rolando’s photographic journey. In 2008, he began capturing the magic of the Giant Kite Festival in Santiago Sacatepéquez, an event that quickly captivated his imagination. Over the years, his dedication and persistence helped him forge meaningful connections with the local artisans and communities behind this colorful tradition. Although the process was neither quick nor easy, Rolando’s commitment allowed him to immerse himself in the heart of the Festival, giving him a rare and intimate perspective of this cultural gem.

In 2024, the ancient tradition of making Giant Kites was officially recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. In honor of this momentous recognition, Rolando celebrated the tradition through his lens, documenting the Festival from both the ground and the sky, capturing its timeless spirit and profound cultural significance.
